According to a tongue-in-cheek but fascinating article on Eater.com late last year, 11 food tried to kill Americans in 2018.

“(Last) year was a real doozy for recalls and foodborne illness outbreaks,” the article says. “Every time you turned around, it seemed something in your fridge or pantry or on a restaurant menu was trying to kill you — be it ground beef, lettuce, or something totally innocuous-seeming, like breakfast cereal or birthday cake.”

The article went on to say that food related illness outbreaks aren’t becoming more common, but experts are getting better at detecting them.

The 11 foods listed were:

  • Breakfast cereal
  • Cake mix
  • Chipotle
  • Eggs
  • Goldfish crackers
  • Ground beef
  • Lettuce
  • Pistachios
  • Tahini
  • Turkey
  • Salad bars

The article includes this note: “As there were literally thousands of food recalls and hundreds of foodborne illness outbreaks in 2018, this is not intended to be a comprehensive list; rather, consider it a roundup of the most impactful and the most unusual.”
